The storm that brought Milagro to its knees

Between March 26 and 30, Milagro faced one of its worst weather disasters. With 232 millimeters of rain falling in just four days, the city was overwhelmed, exacerbated by an ill-timed high tide. The aftermath: flooded streets, homes underwater, and thousands of families battling against the encroaching waters.

Rural areas were not spared either. Communities such as Roberto Astudillo, Cachote, Chobo, and Paraíso del Chobo bore the brunt of the storm's fury. The overflowing Milagro River sealed the fate of thousands, leaving them trapped in chaos and despair.

A staggering number: 40,000 affected
The figures are alarming. According to official estimates, around 10,000 families—roughly 40,000 people—have been impacted by the floods. While heavy machinery is on standby to assist, authorities warn that little can be done until the water levels recede.

An irreparable tragedy
Amid the catastrophe, the worst occurred in the Palma Azul sector. A one-and-a-half-year-old child lost his life after drowning in the floodwaters that filled his home. Despite desperate attempts to save him, doctors could only confirm his passing. A loss beyond words, leaving a family shattered.

Emergency measures to contain the crisis
The Cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE) has swiftly implemented urgent measures to mitigate the disaster's impact:

  • Restricting heavy vehicle access to prevent further street damage.

  • Distributing potable water to affected residents.

  • Setting up waste collection points and mobile health brigades.

  • Coordinating with the Prefecture to distribute food kits if necessary.

  • Requesting additional resources to handle the emergency.

Authorities remain on high alert while Milagro's residents try to salvage what little the floodwaters left behind.
