A Death Following Liposuction in an Unlicensed Clinic
Rome — The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into manslaughter following the death of Ana Sergia Alcivar Chenche, a 46-year-old Ecuadorian national, who passed away on Sunday evening at the emergency room of Policlinico Umberto I. Three medical professionals are now under investigation: plastic surgeon Jose Lizarraga Picciotti, the anesthetist, and a nurse — all involved in the cosmetic procedure the woman was undergoing.
According to investigators, the patient suffered severe complications during a liposuction procedure performed in a medical office located in the Torrevecchia area. The medical team allegedly attempted internal resuscitation before calling, with significant delay, a private ambulance. Emergency services (118) were never contacted. The woman arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest, already intubated. She was pronounced dead around 8:00 PM.
The premises used as a clinic have been sealed by authorities. The last health authorization granted by the Lazio Region dates back to 2007, and the facility had been operating without permits for over a decade. Ongoing investigations are examining the availability of medical equipment and whether basic emergency devices such as defibrillators were present.

Systemic Irregularities and Prior Complaints Against the Clinic Owner
Dr. Lizarraga, a Peruvian citizen properly registered with the Italian Medical Board, had previously been reported for patient injuries following surgical procedures in 2006 and 2018. The clinic on Via Franco Roncati 6, located in the Primavalle district, lacked authorization to carry out any surgical procedures, constituting a systemic violation of healthcare regulations.
An autopsy will be ordered on Wednesday by Prosecutor Andrea D’Angeli. The investigation is focused on whether clinical risks were underestimated and if emergency protocols were ignored or delayed. The case raises a quiet but urgent reflection on the real meaning of the word “well-being” in the aesthetic field — especially when professional boundaries blur and competence is replaced by improvisation.
